Economic Security

The U.S. shipyard industrial base is vital to America’s economic security.

The private U.S. shipbuilding and repair industry employs highly skilled men and women building the largest and most sophisticated fleets in the world.

According to the U.S. Maritime Administration, the U.S. shipyard industry supports more than 100,000 direct shipyard jobs across the United States, produces $7.9 billion in direct labor income and contributes $9.8 billion in direct GDP to the national economy.

Additionally, for each shipyard job created, there are 2.6 jobs created in the associated domestic supplier base across the country. In fact, the associated supplier base supports more than 400,000 jobs across the country, in all 435 Congressional districts and generates $23.9 billion in income and $36 billion worth of goods and services each year.

Protecting International Commerce

The national and economic security of the United States depends upon the secure use of the world’s oceans. The oceans offer all nations, even landlocked nations, a network of sea-lanes and highways vital to security and prosperity. The world’s oceans are likewise both a barrier to and a conduit for threats to the security of people everywhere. Like all other countries, the United States is highly dependent on the oceans for its security and the welfare of its people and economy.
