SCA and OSHA National Alliance

SCA has partnered with OSHA through the Alliance program since 2003. The Alliance promotes continued awareness and training of employees in the industry.  Through the Alliance, OSHA and the Shipbuilding Group will provide shipyards across the country with information, guidance, and access to training resources that will help them protect the health and safety of workers, particularly by reducing and preventing exposure to electrical, ergonomic, struck-by, and slip, trip and fall hazards in shipyard employment, and by addressing issues of non-English-speaking or limited-English-speaking workers. Currently, SCA has an Alliance with OSHA Region 3.

OSHA Alliance Products and Resources

The Alliance’s goals include:

Raising Awareness of OSHA’s Rulemaking and Enforcement Initiatives:

  • To share information on occupational safety and health laws and standards, including the rights and responsibilities of workers and employers.
  • To convene or participate in forums, roundtable discussions, or stakeholder meetings on shipyard safety and health issues to help forge innovative solutions in the workplace or to provide input on safety and health issues.

Outreach and Communication:

  • To develop information on the recognition and prevention of workplace hazards, and to develop ways of communicating such information (e.g., print and electronic media, electronic assistance tools, and OSHA’s and the Shipbuilding Group’s websites) to employers and workers in the industry.
  • To speak, exhibit or appear at OSHA’s or the Shipbuilding Group’s conferences, local meetings, or other events such as SCA’s Bi-Annual Safety Seminars.
  • To share information among OSHA personnel and industry safety and health professionals regarding the Shipbuilding Group’s good practices or effective approaches through training programs, workshops, seminars and lectures (or any other applicable forum) developed by participants.

SCA remains committed to safety, raising awareness and helping elevate the standard of excellence for safe and sound workplaces.

Safe + Sound Campaign

SCA was a proud Partner of the national Safe + Sound Campaign, which encourages every workplace in the U.S. to have a safety and health program. Safety and health programs foster a proactive approach to “finding and fixing” workplace hazards before they can cause injury or illness, ensuring workers go home safe and sound every day. Core elements of the safety and health programs are management leadership, worker participation, and finding and fixing hazards.

SCA – OSHA Alliance

Through the Alliance, OSHA and the SCA use relevant injury, illness, and hazard exposure data when appropriate to help identify areas of emphasis for Alliance awareness, outreach, and communication activities.

Together, the Alliance has three core objectives:

1. Raising Awareness of OSHA’s Rulemaking and Enforcement Initiatives

  • Share information on OSHA’s National Emphasis Programs, Regulatory Agenda, and opportunities to participate in the rulemaking process.
  • Share information on occupational safety and health laws and standards, including the rights and responsibilities of workers and employers.

2. Training and Education

  • Develop effective training and education programs for OSHA staff and shipyard employees regarding the hazards associated with the shipbuilding industry, including electricity, ergonomics, struck-by, slips, trips and falls, and to deliver such information to constituent employers and workers.

3. Outreach and Communication

  • Develop information on the recognition and prevention of workplace hazards, and to develop ways of communicating such information (e.g., print and electronic media, electronic assistance tools, and OSHA’s and the Shipbuilding Group’s Web sites) to employers and workers in the industry.
